Love In Paris
aka Another 9 1/2 Weeks

I thought there was little chemistry between Mickey and Kim Basigner in 9 1/2 Weeks but after watching the sequel, I changed my mind. Comparing the two, the sequel sucks. It lacked the erotism in 9 1/2 Weeks. The result is bland and boring. It was like watching Angel Heart only minus the mystery and the climax which leaves nothing much. Everhart didn't quite bring out the character. Fontaine... I didn't even know who Fontaine was until I looked up the cast list from IMDB. The Vittorio character was overdone, unecessary and really irritating...

The story: John flies to Paris to attend an auction for Elizabeth's paintings in hope of seeing her again. Instead of finding her, he meets Lea Carlot (Angie Everhart), Elizabeth's friend, who is the only link to the elusive woman he loved. Instead of giving him some straight answers to Elizabeth's whereabouts, Lea taunts and seduces John with the sexual games he once played with Elizabeth. Finally, after all that song and dance, he finds out that Elizabeth is dead.

9 1/2 Weeks, brings us thru' the gradual emotional changes in Elizabeth from the start to the end of their relationship while John remains a rather anonymous character. Another 9 1/2 Weeks, however, focuses on John and reveals more of his inner feelings (this is about the only part of the movie that I liked). We see him on a more personal level (hell, this time we even get to know his sirname!). He might appear to be a lovely scumbag in 9 1/2 Weeks, but in the sequel we discover that he really loves Elizabeth and regrets losing her. Hell, he even attempted suicide (at the beginning of the movie). And through Lea's words, we learn how much impact John had on Elizabeth's life even after she left him.

One particular scene I liked the most was when John arrives at the auction (that was way before he learns about her death), he spots someone whom he thinks might be Elizabeth. As he stares at her backview, the expression on his face speaks volume...

Other Summaries and Reviews

ANOTHER VACUOUS SEQUEL

Mickey Rourke made a couple of provocative films in the 1980s: "The Wild Orchid'' and "Nine 1/2 Weeks.'' Since then, he has had little luck with other projects, so he has returned to the subject matter, and sequels, of his former successes. But "Wild Orchid 2'' gained little notice a couple of years ago, and "Another 9 1/2 Weeks'' deserves even less attention. The movie makes its premiere on the Movie Channel at 9 p.m. (ET/PT) Saturday, Sept. 20, but is actually an independent production acquired by the network that will arrive on home video soon. The tedious and unsatisfying sexual-tease plot finds John (Rourke) hanging out in darkened hotel rooms in Paris with hookers, still trying to fill the void left when he was dumped by Elizabeth (Kim Basinger) 10 years earlier. When he attends an auction of Elizabeth's artwork in hopes of finding her, he winds up connecting with her best friend, Lea (Angie Everhart), who initiates a similar kind of aloof role-playing game that John enjoyed with Elizabeth. But it isn't the same for John, and it certainly isn't the same for the audience, who, this time around, will be bored to tears.
