The movie begins with Billy being released from jail. And he trods
out into the bare, snow covered open and waits for a bus.
Mickey's role is ultra small. Juz a crucial scene in which he
goes through a long-winded story about a very good friend of his
being wrongly accused, and the deal was that Billy takes the rap
or "very very bad things" will happen. The "friend" of course
is none other than Mickey himself. Short as it is, that crucial
scene and piece of monologue lets you understand what happened
before that landed Billy in jail.
I enjoyed the way Mickey played out the bookie character. Without
the spoken lines, he'd look like he was juz talking about something
mundane and feeling bored. But when you listen to what he was
saying, you can sense the underlying menace that had Billy cowering
like a scared puppy. As for the rest of the movie, I enjoyed it
totally. It traces Billy's journey after he steps out from prison
and embarks on a revenge mission and meets the love of his life
(Christina Ricci) under the least romantic circumstances. There
are no gorgeous babes or hunks, no bombastic lines, and both leads
wore their same tired outfits from start to end. But with a good
script and great acting skills, these two characters spun out
a strange love story that is simply endearing.
